Wales on Line Review of Craig y Nos Castle
10th May 2023

"The little known haunted gothic mansion with gorgeous and tranquil grounds you can just lose yourself in...."

"Nestled half way between Swansea and Brecon is a stunning gothic mansion which looks as though it has leapt straight off the page of a romantic fairytale book. Built in roughly 1841 on what is now the A4067 between Pen-y-Cae and Glyntawe, and steeped in history, it's no wonder why the impressive building, with its ornate stone facade, is said to be one of the most haunted castles in Wales. Today, chilling ghost tours are on offer, with members guided through the venue's most haunted rooms. These include the theatre basement where Adelina Patti would once have made her entrance onto the stage, the children's ward at the end of a long dark corridor complete with original light fittings, and the treatment room which was once home to tuberculosis patients in the 1920s.... read more.."

"Perhaps one of the most unnerving elements of the tour is the room of John Mellon, who was said to be an employee of Adelina Patti and suffered an untimely death in a room on the building's top floor. During an episode of Most Haunted, psychic Derek Acorah said he felt as though he was being pushed out of its window.

For those brave enough, there is also an opportunity to stay as a guest: whether you're looking for a short B&B break, a dog-friendly getaway or a budget-friendly family holiday. According to its website, it boasts 36 rooms in total with a bar, kitchen, gym and dining facilities "for the perfect break away".

Review from Dec 2022 WOW !!  It was a first time visit at this beautiful castle and it certainly didn't dissapoint. We booked for 4 of us to share a room in the court yard. Number 13 sleeps 4. Two singles upstairs and a king-size downstairs. From the welcome , settings, cleanliness , and food it was fantastic. We did the Ghost night and the history tour the next morning. At £99 each for everything (full buffet style breakfast Inc) evening meal, Ghost tour and history tour it was excellent value for money. (Editors note: rate is now £115 per person in 2023). The Castle is so beautiful, the history tour with Jeremy was excellent, not to mention the views. It snowed whilst on the Ghost tour which added to the magic and mystery. We will definitely be back and have a better look around the grounds and area. Thank you to all the staff who made it a magical stay.

10/12/2022: Customer Feedback Form: "Food was delicious to our evening meal and breakfast. Very high standard of food. Staff were extremely professional and friendly, nothing too much trouble. We stayed in the family room and it was fantastic. Plenty of space, lovely and warm and very clean. (Room was AB15). Beautiful settings, will be coming back in the warmer months to go on those lovely walks we could see. Absolutely fantastic, enjoyed every minute. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends and family. Thank you for a fantastic stay. Booked in for the Ghost Hunt event and was not disappointed, lots of goings on in the building and would invite anyone to go and enjoy the vigil. Brilliant stay from start to finish. Thank you so much for a brilliant overnight stay.

15/10/2021: AB21 - We attended a ghost tour evening that included a set meal in the restaurant. The food was delicious. Being a vegetarian, I was very pleased that the waitress was able to offer an alternative vegetarian choice of nut roast when I mentioned that I had food intolerances to some of the vegetarian ingredients on the set menu.

Paul of Celestial Paranormal writes:

I'm Paul and I'm the owner and tour guide of Celestial Paranormal.

I've been taking ghost tours/investigations at Craig Y Nos Castle for near on 15 years. I started back in 2008 when I used to pay to go on tours/investigations with Steve Graham. I was coming nearly every week and it was something that got me through the working week knowing I was going on an investigation.

I've always had an interest in the paranormal ever since I was a child. Since a child I've always seen things that I couldn't explain. Things like figures standing at the end of my bed to voices that no one else heard. It was very frightening but as I became and adult, it grew alongside me. It felt normal and just part of my life.

Since I've started conducting investigations at the Castle many people have asked me what I've seen, where the most active areas are and what's the best experience I've had.

As in seeing spirit, I've seen many at the Castle over many years of investigating. From children to nurses to spirits connected to people who I take on the tours who are trying to come through the glass experiment.

As for the most active area of the Castle, I can't pinpoint one area in particular as each and every room we conduct séances are very active with paranormal activity. Some nights can be more active than others, but it all depends on the people participating. If the people participating are open minded and focusing on the experiment we tend to get a lot of activity.

Regarding my best experience I've witnessed in 15 years was probably upstairs on the derelict floors which once held TB patients. There were only 4 on the tour itself that night, we were in the corridor upstairs and a man was trying to open an old patient's toilet door but couldn't turn the door knob. He was over 6ft tall and well built, he was struggling so I tried but for some reason the door knob would not turn. So we gave it a few seconds and tried again, still no luck and then all of a sudden from nowhere we all heard a child laughing from further down the corridor. We all stood there in shock as it was clear as day, the man turned to the door and he opened the door with ease. It's as if the child was stopping anyone from opening that door for a game and a laugh at our expense.

Each and every tour is different and that's down to the people on the tour. Any negativety from one single person can ruin an entire night as their negatively produces negative energy which in itself can stop any activity from happening. More often than not the tours themselves are fantastic with people experiencing something during the night, from a touch to seeing something that they can't explain.

On each and every tour/investigation we conduct experiments in every room we visit. The theatre Cellar we normally try glass swirling with 'yes' and 'no' answers to every question. This experiment has proved to be very successful in connecting to spirit. We also do open and closed séances. An open séance is where members of the public sit in a room altogether or individually and call out. A closed séance is where everyone joins hands to form a circle. This is where I believe that when everyone is holding hands it forms a collective energy and circulates through everyone going around the circle and creates an infinite energy which in turn helps spirit communicate. Also on the night we use a ouijia table, which like the glass swirling gets fantastic results to many questions.

I hope to see you soon on your very own investigation.

Fridays event at Craig Y Nos Castle; 06/08/2021

Ghost Tour by 'Lost Entity' lostentityparanormal@gmail.com Tel: 07376 931 632. A big thank you to all our guests for joining us and also thank you to our team for doing a fantastic job as always!  Our Team: Tracey, Nigel, Sophie, Leanne, Lesley, Caroline & Sandie who did a wonderful job as usual. It was also mine & Nigels wedding anniversary, so we celebrated doing what we love with people we love. Thank you all for making it so special. Also a huge thank you to the staff at Craig Y Nos Castle for making us feel so welcome. Jen on reception in particular went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. We were also lucky enough to be given a history tour after breakfast with a lovely young lady named Gwen who was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the castle. Thank you so much! We all really enjoyed, it was facilitating.

The food was delicious, a two course meal and full breakfast served in the most beautiful of settings. The accommodation was unique and varied from room to room, comfy, clean and steeped in history.

ACTIVITY ON THE NIGHT; LIGHT BALLS; did flash in response to questions in many areas.  REM PODS; Did not activate. K2 METERS; Flashed in many areas in response to questions. SLS CAMERA; Picked up a child size figure in the old tb hospitals large ward upstairs that seemed to be holding on to a guests hand and leg. A large figure also showed up in the back part of the room but only briefly.  GEO POD; Did not activate.  SPIRIT PORTAL; No voices came through.

GHOST APP; Picked up a few words and names that were later validated. LASER GRID; No anomalies detected. OUIJA BOARDS; Fantastic communication sessions led by our psychic/ Tradition Witch Lesley. Family members communicating and validating their presence which proved emotional for some guests. Spirts from the castle also coming through including Adelina Patti herself who was particularly drawn to guest Robyn who actually resembles Adelina. Robyn was even feeling her emotions which was quite overwhelming but certainly not in any sinister way. Automatic writing was also used by Lesley to relay a message from Adelina. Protection is always used before during and afterwards!

THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA; Picked up a few anomalies including a strange heat signature within the corridor leading to the large tb ward upstairs.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES; Everything from cold shivers, taps and touches by unseen hands, heat circling guests. Shadow figures, tapping and whistles repeating guests whistles. Footsteps heard on the stairs, a lady singing. I along with two other guests heard the clearest sound of a little boy crying behind the screens in the large upstairs tb ward. It made my night, honestly the clearest disembodied voice I have personally ever heard.  We carried out a thorough investigation with our guests, some new to the paranormal and also returning guests eager to rebook which mean a lot to us all! We send you all love and blessings. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

Review from Jul 5, 2023: Haunted location

Castle has amazing history and there is lots to explore in terms of corridor’s, rooms and interesting artefacts on the walls. We had a ghost tour and visited the upper sections of the castle which are off limits if you just stay generally. Room was great, all the furniture was very old but bed comfortable with tea/coffee facilities and the bathroom was en suite shower and nice and roomy.

Stunning and unforgettable place

Review from Feb 5, 2023 An in believably stunning place and location. We joined a haunting experience for a night and had a fantastic time. The food was delicious catering for our vegan and veggie diets. The room was beautiful and cosy and the beds comfy. The staff are friendly and helpful. We did a history tour as well with one of the owners as our guide and were blown away by the history of the place.

Had the most amazing stay

Had the most amazing stay and time at the castle last night the service of every single member of staff was such a pleasure they were all absolutely so kind generous and helpful with any situation and there on hand to answer and help with any questions. The room we stayed in was absolutely perfect comfortable and had everything me and my friend needed.

We then had the pleasure of taking part in one of the ghost tours which I was so scared beforehand but can honestly say I had the most wonderful yes quite scary on times but absolutely an experience I can never ever forget and left with some memories I will cherish for ever....
Our ghost tourist who was named Paul made our experience comfortable exciting slightly scary but wonderful all in one and couldn't have made it any more wonderful than he did.

Our food was just the same as all the other service too wonderful and served with any recommendations myself being gluten free and were forever made sure we were ok. Thank you so much for the most wonderful experience Paul and thank you so much for all the staff at Craig y Nos Castle who made the stay from start to finish perfect xx. Good room service · Great hotel bar · Thoughtful amenities · Historic building

Ghost Tour for husbands birthday

I booked the ghost tour as a little something different for my husbands birthday and I can hand on heart say that we had the most amazing time and would stay again within a heart beat. The Castle is impressive upon arrival. Check in was efficient and the receptionist showed us to our room. Room was small but plenty of room for the two of us. Furniture was what you would expect is such an old establishment and added to the ambience, bathroom equally so and all in good working order.

We settled in and headed to the bar for a couple of drinks pre dinner. This is where we met Catherine (not sure of her job title but she seemed to do a lot of everything) Catherine is a credit as were all other staff we met during our visit to Craig y Nos. Catherine went out of her way to add the little touches that certainly made our experience what it was. All staff stopped for a little chat about the history of the place. Dinner was amazing, I had the Salmon and my husband had the steak. My Salmon and accompliments were really good, but I soon regretted my choice once I had a morsel of my husbands steak, it was divine cooked exactly as asked.

The Ghost Tour! Amazing! We were only a small group of 4 and Paul was our guide. We went with an open mind my husband being the least convinced of the existence of ghostly spirits. We were not disappointed. Everyone in the group had one experience or another in different places of the castle and all left with absolute conviction that the castle is indeed haunted. Paul was fabulous and very knowledgeable. We didn't do the oiuja at the end through choice. Stanley one of the resident ghost took great pleasure in scaring the bejesus out of us. I would highly recommend this place and as previously stated would stay again in a heart beat and look forward to doing so soon.
